FP7

Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is the European Union’s main instrument for funding scientific research in Europe, and it will run from 2007-2013. FP7 is the natural successor to the previous programme, FP6, and it is the result of years of consultation with the research community from both the public and private sectors, with economic actors, and with political decision makers in Europe. FP7 is both larger and more comprehensive than its predecessors. It is also more flexible, with simplified procedures.

The programme has a total budget of over € 50 billion and includes four Specific Programmes, as well as another one related to Nuclear Research:

  • Cooperation programme represents the core of FP7 and fosters cross-border collaborative research
  • Ideas programme will support research solely on the basis of scientific excellence
  • People programme aims to develop human resources and enable knowledge transfer, organize “networking” activities (workshops and conferences for researchers outside the partnership); international mobility
  • Capacities programme aims to strengthen the research-innovation capacities from all over Europe, enabling their efficient capitalization

The Framework Programmes for Research have two main strategic objectives:

  •   to strengthen the scientific and technological base of European industry;
  •   to encourage its international competitiveness, while promoting research that supports EU policies.

In all EU Member States, in the countries associated with FP7 and in several other countries, National Contact Points have been set up to offer personalized help and advice to researchers and organisations intending to participate. In Republic of Moldova, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova is the host institution for National Contact Points for FP7, while the Agency for Innovation and Technology Transfer hosts the National Contact Point for Small and Medium Enterprises of the FP7.
